Shamil Tayyar, a member of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, confirmed that there is no intention to release Selahattin Demirtaş, the former leader of the Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, at this time.

He explained that Demirtaş is serving a 42-year prison sentence in the Kobani case, and that the case is still under appeal, while the Ministry of Justice has also appealed the European Court of Human Rights’ decision regarding violations of his rights.

Tayyar emphasized that all reports about the imminent release of Demirtaş are false, and that the case is still under judicial review.

The MP from Turkey’s Justice and Development Party stressed that there is no possibility of releasing Selahattin Demirtaş at present, noting that Demirtaş is serving a prison sentence and that his file is still under appeal with ongoing challenges against the European Court of Human Rights’ ruling, making all news about his release currently inaccurate.

Turkish media reports on Tuesday suggested that the Turkish judiciary might release Selahattin Demirtaş, the former leader of the Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party in Turkey, on October 8.
