President Donald Trump sharply criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for failing to cut interest rates this year, saying Powell’s ability to steer monetary policy depends on securing approval and support from a broader segment of committee members and the economic community. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is composed of the chair and eleven other members who have equal voting rights on each interest-rate decision by majority vote. One seat is currently vacant after the resignation of Adriana Coughler in August; Trump nominated adviser Stephen Miran to fill it, according to The Wall Street Journal.
