Tweeters launched a campaign on social media platforms demanding Israel release doctors Hussam Abu Safiya and Marwan Al-Hams, after Tel Aviv informed mediators of its refusal to release them.
Initially, tweeters asked: Why does the Zionist entity fear releasing Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and Marwan Al-Hams?
Some activists responded that Dr. Abu Safiya’s danger equals that of figures like Marwan Barghouti, Ahmed Saadat, and Wael Barghouti. This is how the occupation views him, as he has been detained in the notorious “Sde Teyman” military base since his arrest in December 2024 and Israel refuses to release him in any deal, similar to other detainees classified as “dangerous.”
They added that the danger of Abu Safiya and Al-Hams lies in the fact that they are doctors who were not intimidated by the occupation’s threats or assassination attempts.
Others confirmed that Abu Safiya remained keen on saving children, unaware that by doing so he frustrates the occupation which deliberately targets them, fearing that a new leader like Al-Sinwar, Al-Deif, Barghouti, or Ayash might emerge from among them.
Bloggers saw Abu Safiya as very similar to Gaza — in his vigor, dignity, sacrifice, and heroism. One blogger concluded: Do you now understand why they do not want to release him?
Others wrote: For these reasons, they refuse to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, because of his white coat stained with blood, his high humanity and pride that reached the sky, and his great patience with the ordeal he endured. He buried a son of his own with his own hands and refused their threats, insisting on staying.
They added: The humane doctor imprisoned the entity’s leaders with his ethics and patriotism before they imprisoned him, besieged them before they besieged him, and humiliated them before they humiliated him. They realize that his release with his head held high in a prisoner exchange deal will shatter their claimed myth of might and defeat their tanks that advance steadily in the darkest times.
Activists commented on the Israeli refusal, saying: When Israel refuses to release doctors who saved lives and manipulates prisoner lists to hide the truth, it confirms that the occupation fears the free human more than it fears weapons. Freedom for Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, and every Palestinian prisoner who paid the price of his dignity.
Others questioned the danger these doctors pose to the Israeli occupation, saying: Even doctors have not been spared from the aggression’s brutality. What danger could a doctor carrying a stethoscope, not a weapon, pose? When those who heal wounds are arrested, we realize the crisis is deeper than a conflict; it is a humanitarian and moral crisis.
Others wished for their immediate release, saying: We hope the medical teams and hospital heads kidnapped from Gaza Strip are released. Not including them in demands and pressure for their release grants legitimacy to the Israeli narrative that claims hospitals are military infrastructure and that their workers are part of that system.
They pointed out that their release should be non-negotiable within the list of 1700 prisoners from Gaza Strip. They are civilian humanitarian cadres kidnapped while performing their duties and imprisoned because they refused to evacuate hospitals, flee, and leave patients and injured behind. We all spoke when they played the role of heroes and were kidnapped, and now that there is a chance to release them, we remain silent!
