The Norwegian committee will award the Nobel Peace Prize tomorrow in Oslo amid global anticipation, as the number of armed conflicts has reached a high level this year.
Egypt, with its institutions and people, deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for the great effort it has exerted to establish security and stability in the region during the past period. Egypt has succeeded in several mediations to stop the bloodshed in Gaza over the last decade, bring together the Libyan factions to avoid military solutions, participate in the Quartet initiative to activate peaceful solutions in Sudan, and take prominent moves through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution to stop armed conflicts in Africa and establish peace.
The Egyptian mediation efforts, with the participation of Qatar, the United States, and Turkey, succeeded in reaching an agreement on the mechanisms for implementing the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza between Hamas and Israel, following serious and marathon negotiations that resulted in a preliminary agreement to stop the war.
The meetings hosted by Sharm El-Sheikh crowned the intensive Egyptian diplomatic and political efforts led by Cairo for nearly two years to stop the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. Egypt was among the first countries to act by hosting the Cairo Conference in October 2023, which warned of the expansion of the conflict in the region.
Egypt’s efforts focused on the necessity of stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza and pushing to bring large quantities of humanitarian aid to displaced Palestinians, despite the strict Israeli siege that obstructs any aid from reaching the Palestinian people. However, Egyptian pressures succeeded in breaking the siege to ensure aid reaches civilians trapped in Gaza.
Egypt has mobilized all its diplomatic tools in recent years to support the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It emphasized the necessity of activating the two-state solution as the only way to stop the conflict and escalation in the Middle East. This was recognized by foreign and European countries that chose to recognize the State of Palestine and confirm the necessity of the two-state solution in line with the Egyptian vision and in support of the Saudi-French initiative.
Egyptian mediation efforts succeeded in reaching a humanitarian truce in Gaza last January after Cairo presented a comprehensive vision to reach an agreement, which was adopted by the United States and Qatar. However, Israel refused to enter negotiations for the second phase of the agreement, preferring to continue the war on Gaza.
Egypt has consistently rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians and liquidate the cause in all its regional and international moves. It stressed the importance of supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) internationally, rejecting any Israeli attempts to displace Palestinians to liquidate the Palestinian cause, and continuing Egyptian support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
In recent years, Egypt has hosted talks and consultations among Palestinian factions to achieve reconciliation and end division, pushing for an agreement on a unified national vision to activate the peace process in the Middle East and support Palestinians’ aspirations to establish their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders by establishing the principle of the two-state solution and ending the military escalation that will not solve the decades-long conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Israel and Hamas signed the first phase of the plan.
In response, Trump wrote: “I am honored to announce that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our peace plan. This means all hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw its forces to the agreed line as a first step towards a strong, stable, and lasting peace. All parties will be treated fairly.”
Trump described the day as a great day for the Arab and Islamic world, Israel, all surrounding countries, and the United States, thanking the mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey who worked with them to make this historic and unprecedented event successful. Praise to the peacemakers.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, during a speech on Wednesday, invited U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the signing ceremony of the agreement to end the war in Gaza if reached.
