Ahmed Maher, a labor market data analyst at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), revealed the success of the Egyptian economy in increasing the number of employed persons in 2024 compared to the previous year 2023.

Maher confirmed in statements to “Youm7” that the increase in the number of employed persons in 2024 reached 969,000, distributed between 615,000 jobs for males and 354,000 additional jobs for females. Regarding the economic activities that provided the most job opportunities during 2024, agriculture and fishing activities provided about 311,000 jobs, followed by wholesale and retail trade and manufacturing activities which provided most of the remaining recorded opportunities.

Maher stated that the calculation of job opportunities development in Egypt must be done annually rather than quarterly to accurately measure the real increase in the number of employed persons and avoid seasonal factors that affect job opportunities by rising and falling.

He pointed out that the methodology followed by CAPMAS to monitor unemployment data in Egypt includes about 90,000 households to measure unemployment rates throughout the year, distributed as 22,500 households visited every three months across all governorates of the republic to collect data from their members.

Maher added that there is a continuous decline in the unemployment rate during the second quarter of the current year (April-June) to 6.1%, a decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous quarter, thanks to the economic activities that absorbed new labor during that period. He noted that agriculture and fishing activities absorbed about 337,000 new jobs during the second quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, followed by transportation and storage activities which absorbed about 82,000 employed persons, then construction activities with about 44,000 employed persons, and finally manufacturing with about 17,000 employed persons.
