Journalist Dr. Mahmoud Mosel, member of the Egyptian Senate, confirmed that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas represents a major shift in the American stance, completely contradicting the US actions just one month ago when it denied the Palestinian president a visa to enter the US and attend the UN General Assembly meetings.

Mosel added in a televised interview on the program “Al-Soura” with journalist Lamis Elhadidy on Al-Nahar channel that this meeting was not planned in the official summit arrangements but resulted from a clear French initiative, where French President Emmanuel Macron personally brought the Palestinian president to introduce him to Trump, reflecting the start of a new and changing mediation role in the US position.

Dr. Mosel explained that Trump appeared at the Sharm El-Sheikh summit as if continuing his bias towards Israel but in a new way, noting that Trump himself said he is “the most pro-Israel US president,” which is not very different from former President Joe Biden’s support. However, there is a qualitative change in Trump’s stance towards President Sisi and the Palestinian cause.

He pointed out that Trump, who in recent months spoke about continuing the war and full support for Israel and invading Gaza if hostages were not released, now talks about reconstruction, a new Middle East, new peace, and saving the region from a third world war.

Dr. Mahmoud Mosel continued, saying, “The region was on the brink of an eruption, and Egypt was closer to war than peace, but now there is a clear retreat in the American discourse,” noting that Trump now listens a lot to President Sisi and President Macron, who played a decisive role in directing the US position, alongside some Arab leaders defending the Palestinian cause.

Dr. Mosel clarified that the war has effectively ended, pointing to the Palestinian crowds welcoming Palestinian prisoners today as a brilliant scene expressing the victory of Palestinian will.

He added, “What we saw in Gaza is no different from the scene of Palestinians returning on Al-Rashid Street to the northern Gaza Strip, confirming that this great people cannot be broken and that the war effectively ended when the Israeli killing machine stopped.”

He noted that President Sisi was precise when he spoke about the stages of solving the Palestinian crisis, starting with governance and providing security, then reconstruction of the sector, and finally the political path to settlement, and that the ceasefire agreement exceeded all expectations, as no one expected the genocide to stop.

Mosel emphasized that Trump promised not to occupy the West Bank or build new settlements in Gaza, explaining that history will record President Sisi’s firm stance rejecting the project of displacing Palestinians, which “was proceeding with full force,” according to him.

He added that Trump’s speech in Israel today was an attempt to force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept peace, while his speech in Sharm El-Sheikh focused on reconstruction and “courting some Arab leaders to support the new American plan.”

Dr. Mosel explained that Netanyahu has become unpopular both domestically and internationally, describing him as “a butcher and war criminal who committed a systematic genocide against the Palestinian people over two years,” affirming that this stance is not only Egyptian but shared by many Arab and European countries.

He pointed to actions taken by Spain and some European countries as punitive measures against Israel, considering this reflects an unprecedented international isolation of Tel Aviv.

Mosel said, “One reason for Trump’s new plan is Israel’s deteriorating international image, massive protests worldwide against it, and growing popular support for Palestinians’ right to life.”

Regarding his view of the Palestinian scene, Dr. Mahmoud Mosel confirmed that Hamas’s role in resistance has ended, explaining that when it tried to combine resistance and political roles, it lost the ability to achieve either, leading to the deterioration of the internal Palestinian situation.

He said, “We are at a new stage that must witness the development of Fatah and the Palestinian Authority, constitutional changes, and holding elections as soon as possible,” affirming that Egypt has already invited Palestinian factions for dialogue and that “the coming phase must witness a real self-review within the Palestinian ranks.”

He continued, “We live in Egypt a good national state that we have not experienced for a long time, confirming the steadfastness of the Egyptian state’s position with the Palestinian cause according to its firm principles and international law.”

Mosel recalled President Sisi’s statements in April 2017 when he told President Trump, “You will find me supportive of any efforts to find a solution to the Palestinian cause, and I am sure you can solve it,” at a time when some thought he was talking about the Deal of the Century, but he was actually talking about the cause of the century, seeing it as a historic opportunity for Trump to solve it.

Dr. Mosel concluded by saying that Trump seeks to be recorded in history as a man of peace, which is what he is trying to present now, adding, “We must help him in ways that serve the Palestinian interest and regional stability, as Egypt has lost much from this war, including the impact on the Suez Canal due to tensions in the Red Sea.”

He pointed out that continuous Egyptian contacts succeeded in changing the image Netanyahu tried to promote in the early months of the war, when he likened Hamas’s actions to the 9/11 attacks, adding, “Egypt succeeded in reversing the image and managing complex negotiations that ended with a ceasefire agreement, salute to the Egyptian negotiator who achieved this historic achievement.”
