Former Foreign Minister Ambassador Mohamed Kamel Amr said that what was presented in the press conference between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not just the result of two hours of discussion, but clearly there was prior consultation between the two sides. He explained that Netanyahu has extensive experience dealing with previous US presidents due to his long tenure as Prime Minister and previously as Foreign Minister.

He added during his interview on “Extra News” TV channel on Monday evening that the only president in modern American history who managed to say “no” to Israel is Trump, despite all that is said about him. This stance had not occurred since US President Dwight Eisenhower, who forced Israel, France, and Britain to withdraw after the 1956 aggression on Egypt.

He pointed out that Trump is distinguished by being an unconventional president, citing his meeting with the North Korean leader and his talk about a “love affair” between them, as well as his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying: “The Republican Party has always been against Russia, but with Trump, the situation completely changed.” He added that Trump previously communicated with Hamas and changed his stance on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom American laws considered a terrorist, describing him as a “very good person,” reflecting his unconventional approach.

The former Foreign Minister confirmed that Netanyahu, like his predecessors among Israeli prime ministers, relied on Congress and the Republican majority to circumvent the positions of US presidents. However, Trump’s full control over the Republican Party and Congress currently makes it almost impossible for them to stand against him if he takes a position not aligned with Israel.

He explained that Netanyahu may not fully accept some elements of the American plan 100%, but he fully understands that it is difficult to say “no” to Trump given the latter’s unconventional personality, current position, and unprecedented dominance over the Republican Party in the United States.
