According to results broadcast on C-SPAN, 54 members of Congress voted in favor of the Republican-proposed bill, while 45 voted against it, with the bill requiring sixty votes to pass.
Previous attempts by lawmakers to reach consensus on similar bills from both Republicans and Democrats have also failed to yield positive results.
House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters he would not call the House to vote on a separate bill to pay military personnel, saying “Democrats in the Senate must support the Republican bill to reopen the government.”
He added, “The House has done its part… the ball is now in the Senate’s court.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reaffirmed his position that “Republican leaders must negotiate with Democrats on the expiration of healthcare tax exemptions before his party will support a funding bill to reopen the government.”
He also told reporters that “a future commitment to negotiate will not be enough to win Democratic support.”
The US government shutdown has entered its second week amid growing concerns among retirees and low-income individuals about economic repercussions affecting salaries and pensions.
