The peace plan unveiled by the White House on Monday to end the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip includes the creation of a “Peace Council” led by U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in an undefined role.
Trump’s peace proposal for Gaza states: “Gaza will be governed by a temporary Palestinian committee of non-political technocrats,” although it does not mention by name any Palestinian or Palestinian group that may participate in the transitional phase.
The committee will be overseen by a new international transitional body called the “Peace Council,” chaired by Trump and including heads of states and other members, including Blair.
The committee will be responsible for the daily administration of public services and municipal affairs in Gaza, and will consist of “qualified Palestinians and international experts” who have not been specified, noting that Hamas will have no role in governing Gaza.
This group will set the framework and finance Gaza’s redevelopment until the Palestinian Authority undergoes major reforms.
Trump’s economic development plan for Gaza’s reconstruction will be implemented through forming a committee of experts “who helped establish some of the modern thriving miracle cities in the Middle East,” and a special economic zone will be created with preferential customs and entry fees negotiated with participating countries.
The plan states that some proposals and investment ideas have been formulated by international groups, which have not been identified.
What is Tony Blair’s latest activity regarding Gaza?
Late last month, Blair visited the White House to meet Trump.
The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change said he “made a number of contacts with various groups regarding Gaza’s reconstruction after the war.”
Late August reports revealed details of a meeting between President Trump, Blair, Jared Kushner (Trump’s son-in-law), and several officials at the White House.
The reports said the conversation focused on the Middle East peace process and discussed ways to rebuild Gaza after it was destroyed by Israeli bombing, as well as the future of the Palestinian Authority after the war ends.
The British newspaper Daily Mail noted that discussions included the “day after” plan, alongside the ongoing crisis in Gaza, especially how to increase food aid and what could be done to release hostages held by Hamas.
The Times reported that Blair is working on plans to transform the war-torn area in Gaza into a “modern commercial hub and tourist destination.”
Talks between Blair and Trump also included plans to increase humanitarian aid, according to The Telegraph.
What did Blair say about Trump’s plan?
On Monday, Blair praised Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza, describing it as “bold and smart.”
Blair said in a statement: “President Trump has presented a bold and smart plan that, if agreed upon, could end the war, bring immediate relief to Gaza, and offer a brighter and better future for its people, while ensuring Israel’s absolute and ongoing security and the release of all hostages.”
