The office of French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that the president has reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a new government.

Lecornu caused an unprecedented crisis in France in over 70 years when he resigned on Monday, just 14 hours after announcing his government lineup.

He stated that “the conditions are set for Macron to appoint a new Prime Minister within the next 48 hours, in order to avoid dissolving the National Assembly.”

He pointed out that most parties do not wish to dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections, according to the conclusions of the recent consultations he held with various parties in an effort to resolve the political crisis.

Lecornu confirmed that he “tried everything possible” to find a consensus to govern the country, stressing that “the team that will take responsibility must be completely free of any presidential ambitions for 2027.”

France is experiencing a growing political crisis, with successive governments struggling to pass austerity budgets through a deeply divided parliament.
