The British newspaper Daily Mail revealed details of the conversation between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their meeting at Anchorage Airport in Alaska on the red carpet.
The newspaper quoted a lip-reading expert saying the first words exchanged during the meeting were Trump’s “Finally.” Upon shaking hands, Trump said, “You finally did it, nice to see you, I am very grateful.”
The expert added that during the warm greeting, the two presidents agreed to “help each other.” Later, when ascending the platform, Trump spoke about the importance of the handshake as it “leaves a good impression,” to which the Russian president nodded while extending his hand to the US president.
The Sun newspaper quoted British lip-reading expert Nicola Hickling, saying the brief dialogue carried important implications about the future of bilateral relations and the war in Ukraine.
She said Putin walked confidently on the red carpet, pointing his thumb towards Trump, who responded with a smile and applause saying, “Finally,” then added, “You have arrived, great to see you, and I am grateful for that.”
According to Hickling, this was a signal from Trump to break the ice and show warmth, while Putin appeared calm and confident, as if sending a message that he was coming from a position of strength.
The conversation then moved to the war in Ukraine, with Putin saying in English, “Thank you – you too,” adding, “I am here to help you,” to which Trump replied, “I will help you.” Putin continued, “I will put an end to this,” and Trump responded, “I hope that happens.”
Experts believe these simple phrases outlined a preliminary understanding about the possibility of de-escalation or a ceasefire.
As they headed to the presidential car known as “The Beast,” Trump smiled and said, “We have to move forward and give this matter the attention it deserves. I know it is serious and long. What a journey.” Trump suggested shaking hands again in front of journalists saying, “Let’s shake hands, it gives a good impression,” to which Putin smiled and said, “Thank you.”
The closed-door talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American Donald Trump lasted two hours and 45 minutes.
The meeting took place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, with talks held in a “three against three” format.
