According to Lebanon Debate, the Beirut indictment body decided to release the former Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, against a bail of 20 million US dollars and five billion Lebanese pounds. The decision also included a travel ban for one year amid ongoing legal proceedings against him. Salameh, who served as governor from 1993 to 2023, is one of the most prominent figures linked to Lebanon’s financial and monetary crisis since 2019. He faced numerous local and international lawsuits related to embezzlement, money laundering, and illicit enrichment. Salameh was arrested in September 2024 after appearing before the Public Prosecutor Judge Jamal Al-Hajjar, amid widespread controversy regarding the legality of his continued detention. Article 108 of the Code of Criminal Procedures limits detention for felonies to six months renewable once, yet Salameh was detained for more than a year during which three consecutive arrest warrants were issued against him.
