Social media users in Turkey, especially influencers on the “X” platform, recently brought back into focus a post by a British lord who expressed his anger at Antalya Airport in Turkey after arriving on a tourist trip. He was surprised by the high prices of food at the airport, which is very crowded during the summer, especially with tourists coming from abroad.

What upset Rami Ranger, a member of the UK House of Lords?

According to Turkish media outlets including “Zaman” website, Ranger was angered by the high prices of food and drinks at Antalya International Airport. The lord shared a price list from a fast-food chain at Antalya Airport, commenting that “the prices are higher than in the United Kingdom.”

He added in a post on the “X” platform: “Those who complain about the cost of living in Britain should visit Antalya Airport in Turkey. There, even a simple hamburger sandwich seems like a luxury.”

The controversy has continued for a week regarding the British lord’s tweet, especially since he tagged Turkish Airlines’ account. Others joined in agreeing that prices are indeed high at Istanbul and Antalya airports, with some considering the prices at the two airports among the highest worldwide, describing it as “theft,” according to their words.

The list shared by Ranger drew attention, where the price of a hamburger meal with fries and a small drink reached 27.9 euros (equivalent to 1,351.21 Turkish lira). The cheapest meal was 19 euros.

This is not the first time tourists have complained about high prices inside tourist and vital places in Turkey compared to global prices in similar locations.

The Turkish government has pledged several times to control prices, but fluctuations in the Turkish lira against foreign currencies negatively affect government plans, according to local media.
