South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas as part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war that has lasted nearly two years.

In a statement reported by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) on Friday, the ministry expressed appreciation for Trump’s initiative in facilitating the agreement, as well as the mediation efforts by neighboring countries including Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.

The ministry added that Seoul hopes the agreement will lead to the swift release of all hostages and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, noting that this marks a critical turning point towards restoring peace and stability in the Middle East.

The ministry confirmed that South Korea will continue to support international efforts aimed at promoting peace in the region, including achieving a two-state solution.

Israel and Hamas had announced their agreement to the long-awaited ceasefire as part of the first phase of President Trump’s plan to end the war that resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians.
