Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to international mechanisms and measures aimed at disarmament, particularly nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, to promote peace and security at both regional and international levels.

According to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, Second Secretary of the Permanent Qatari Delegation to the United Nations, stated before the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York: “The threat posed by the proliferation of conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, continues to endanger states and peoples and violates fundamental human rights. This threat has recently increased due to ongoing armed conflicts in many parts of the world, amid the absence of necessary agreements and arrangements to resolve and limit them.”

Abdulrahman emphasized that avoiding the negative effects of conflict proliferation requires the international community to exert more effort to strengthen disarmament strategies at all levels, including small arms and light weapons. He confirmed that effective implementation of agreements related to monitoring, tracing, combating illicit trafficking, and smuggling of these weapons contributes to limiting their spread and reducing conflict intensity.

He explained that Qatar places great importance on implementing treaties and agreements related to nuclear non-proliferation, banning nuclear weapons, preventing their use or threat of use, and prohibiting nuclear tests. Qatar is updating its national laws and procedures related to disarmament and non-proliferation to align with its international commitments in this field.

The Qatari official also condemned the Israeli occupation forces’ targeting of civilian facilities in the Gaza Strip, including hospitals, schools, and refugee camps, noting that this targeting has led to an unprecedented humanitarian disaster and tens of thousands of civilian casualties, posing a serious threat to international peace and security, especially in the Middle East region.

He pointed out that Qatar has called for an immediate ceasefire and ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, relief, and essential needs to all those in need throughout Gaza.
