Ukraine’s energy facilities were hit by intense Russian strikes early Friday, causing widespread power outages across the country, while U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States and NATO are “increasing pressure” to end the war.

Ukrainian authorities reported that the power went out across the entire eastern part of Kyiv following heavy Russian attacks targeting energy facilities in several regions of Ukraine. The attacks in Zaporizhzhia (southeast) resulted in the death of a 7-year-old child.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on energy targets in Ukraine.

She wrote on Facebook, “Energy experts are taking all necessary measures to minimize negative impacts.”

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the power was cut off across the entire eastern side of the Ukrainian capital due to intense Russian strikes targeting energy facilities in various parts of Ukraine.

He added via the Telegram app that “the left bank is without electricity, and there are also problems with the water network.”

On Friday night, multiple explosions were heard in Kyiv. AFP reporters in central Kyiv said they heard numerous blasts along with sounds of attack drones flying over the capital’s sky.

Politically, Trump announced that the United States and NATO are “increasing pressure” to end the war in Ukraine, after his efforts to open dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire failed.

He told reporters in the Oval Office after meeting Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, “Yes, we are increasing pressure, we are increasing it together and all together, NATO has been great.”

The U.S. president, responding to reporters’ questions, said his administration might impose additional sanctions on Russia.

Trump, who mediated this week to reach a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestinian resistance in Gaza, acknowledged that the war ignited by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has proven difficult to resolve.

Trump held a summit with Putin in Alaska in August but failed to make progress, and since then, Russian attacks on Ukraine have escalated.

Russia indicated on Wednesday that momentum toward a peace agreement in Ukraine largely faded after the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Finnish president told reporters he is confident Trump will be able to move forward in reaching an agreement on Ukraine after completing the Gaza deal between Israel and Hamas.

He added, “I think this (ending the war in Ukraine) will be the next big event.”
