Video footage captured on Sunday documented scenes of torrential floods and flash floods that swept through the city of Salqin in the Idlib countryside in northern Syria, caused by heavy rainfall.

Clips shared by local activists and independently verified by Sanad Agency showed rising water levels in main streets, causing traffic disruptions.

The Syrian Civil Defense stated that the heavy rains in the cities of Salqin and Harem in the Idlib countryside on Sunday caused flash floods that swept away soil and stones on the roads.

They added that their teams worked to drain rainwater and clear the roads of debris and stones to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce accidents.

Activists on social media welcomed the rainfall across various parts of the country, considering it good news especially after a drought wave.

Syria has faced a severe agricultural crisis this year due to a drought wave considered the worst in more than six decades, seriously threatening wheat crops and increasing the risk of food insecurity for about 16 million people, according to United Nations estimates.

About 2.5 million hectares of wheat farmland have been damaged due to harsh climatic conditions, mainly decreased rainfall and a shortened winter season, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
