The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an urgent recall of cinnamon powder from the “Wise Wife” brand after it was found to contain dangerous levels of lead.

Lead is a heavy metal associated with serious health problems including developmental disorders, nervous system diseases, certain types of cancer, and a possible link to autism spectrum disorder.

SLR Food Distribution, based in New York, announced the immediate recall of the products after FDA tests revealed lead levels exceeding permissible limits.

The packages were distributed across several states including New Jersey, New York, Florida, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Ohio, between February 15 of last year and June 28.

The recalled products come in 50-gram transparent plastic containers with black lids, bearing the reference number 0 688474 302853.

So far, no confirmed poisoning cases have been reported, but the FDA warned that even small amounts of lead exposure can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

Chronic exposure may lead to serious damage including developmental disorders in children, long-term neurological problems, kidney effects, and high blood pressure in adults.

Experts explained that lead accumulates in the blood and vital organs such as kidneys, liver, and lungs, and can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, especially in children, leading to learning difficulties and developmental defects.

Research also indicated a link between prolonged lead exposure and increased likelihood of autism spectrum disorder.

The reasons for the cinnamon contamination remain unclear, but authorities suggested several possibilities, including natural lead presence in the soil where spices are grown, deliberate addition for commercial purposes, or use as a coloring agent to enhance appearance.

The FDA urged consumers who purchased these products to return the containers to the place of purchase for a full refund.
