The “Eye of the World Team,” operating under the umbrella of Dubai Cares, continues to make a real impact in combating treatable blindness and making sight a right for everyone. Through its ongoing efforts and multiple partnerships, the team has treated and improved the vision of thousands of patients worldwide, especially in poor and remote areas.
On World Sight Day, attention turns to international efforts to fight treatable blindness, foremost among them cataracts, the leading cause of blindness globally, affecting over 100 million people, despite being treatable with a simple surgery lasting less than 20 minutes.
Despite the simplicity of treatment, millions in impoverished communities still lose their sight due to weak healthcare services or lack of qualified personnel, making treatable blindness one of the harshest manifestations of poverty.
Among pioneering models making a tangible difference in this field is the “Eye of the World Team,” founded in December 2009 as a specialized humanitarian medical initiative combating blindness. Since its inception, it has performed over 125,000 eye surgeries in remote areas across several countries worldwide.
Dubai Cares, within which the team operates, provides a nurturing and supportive environment for innovative humanitarian initiatives, facilitating the implementation of cross-border medical projects.
The team is known for its distinguished approach combining advanced surgeries in camps with local capacity building to ensure the sustainability of humanitarian impact after each medical convoy.
Dr. Mohammed Hindi, founder and CEO of the “Eye of the World Team,” told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) today: “We aspire to treat one million blind patients worldwide. Our goal is not only to perform surgeries but to reduce the gap between efforts on the ground and the real impact on people’s lives. Each surgery for us is an opportunity to restore sight to a human being.”
