Proper tooth brushing is key to ideal dental check-ups and avoiding painful cavities or other issues. Dr. Dagmar Else Slot confirmed that while everyone brushes their teeth, most do not do it correctly. Experts recommend brushing carefully and slowly, taking at least two minutes or more. Dentists advise gentle circular motions because brushing too quickly can harm the gums. It is best to divide the time between the upper and lower teeth, for example, cleaning the lower jaw for 30 seconds before moving to the upper jaw, ensuring all sides of each tooth are cleaned. Dr. Tian Jiang from Harvard Dental School advises angling the brush bristles at 45 degrees toward the gum line where plaque and debris accumulate, rather than brushing at 90 degrees. Brushing twice daily and flossing before or after each session is recommended to remove residue and dirt.
Soft-bristled brushes are preferred over hard ones to avoid damaging teeth and gums, and brushes should be replaced every few months. Only a small amount of toothpaste is needed. Dr. Sasha Ross explained that hard-bristled brushes can remove part of the tooth structure. People with arthritis can use electric toothbrushes to make brushing easier. However, Dr. Jiang emphasized that the technique matters more than the brush itself.
