A team from Aarhus University and the German Institute of Human Nutrition conducted an unprecedented study on the relationship between the brain and the stomach, concluding that synchronization between electrical activity in the stomach and certain brain regions is associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression.
The researchers used a combination of brain MRI imaging and stomach electrical activity tracking, enabling a direct connection between the body’s internal signals and emotional states.
According to Medical Express, individuals who showed greater synchronization between the stomach and brain recorded lower psychological well-being scores, indicating that internal organs play an influential role in emotion formation.
The scientists emphasized that these results do not mean the stomach directly causes disorders, but they provide an indicator that can be used for early prediction or intervention in treating mental illnesses.
Mental health experts consider this discovery a potential breakthrough in understanding the body-emotion relationship and opening the way for new diagnostic and therapeutic tools that consider the gut-brain axis.
