With the return of UN sanctions on Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi revealed that negotiations with the Americans regarding the nuclear program have reached a complete dead end. Araghchi stated today (Tuesday) that his country had presented various proposals and held multiple meetings with the European Troika (France, Germany, and the UK) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York last week.
He said Iran made efforts to reach a settlement but failed due to Washington’s excessive demands and the cooperation of European countries with it, according to his expression. He reaffirmed that activating the “snapback mechanism” aims to push his country to make concessions, which he described as unreasonable or impossible.
Araghchi called on the Iranian people to deal with the political and strategic repercussions of the sanctions, acknowledging that the sanctions will have political and strategic effects that must be confronted, according to local media.
Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described the American demands as unacceptable. He said, “They asked us to hand over all enriched uranium in exchange for delaying the resumption of sanctions for three months… this is ridiculous.” He announced that if his country had to “choose between these illogical demands and the snapback mechanism, it would choose the latter.”
A Russian-Chinese effort last Friday to postpone the re-imposition of international sanctions on Iran in the 15-member UN Security Council failed after only four countries voted in favor, paving the way for the “snapback mechanism.”
Tehran threatened to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with which it signed a new agreement in Cairo, Egypt, on September 9, in response to the re-imposition of UN sanctions.
High-level meetings intensified last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, especially between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Iranian counterpart, in an attempt to reach a settlement on sanctions and conclude a new agreement, but to no avail. The European Troika countries, which launched the “snapback mechanism” process in late August, demanded that Tehran grant IAEA inspectors full access to all nuclear facilities. They conditioned the resumption of negotiations with Washington, as well as the adoption of a mechanism to ensure the security of enriched uranium stockpiles, but Iran confirmed that these conditions are unfair and constitute pressure on it.
