The American news network CNN considered that US President Donald Trump is making Washington’s enemies great again, commenting on the massive military parade organized by China in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un together for the first time.
The American news network said in an analysis published on its website on Wednesday that Trump is undermining Washington’s power, explaining that many of the steps he takes to show US strength actually end up weakening it, while noting that supporters of the US president oppose any description of his foreign policies other than a resounding success.
It also saw that the power doing the most to weaken the West is the head of state – the United States – which has guaranteed freedom and democracy for generations.
Trump had accused the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea of conspiring against the United States, writing on his Truth Social account addressing the Chinese president: “Please convey my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you conspire against the United States.”
According to the American news network, Trump’s post, which resonated worldwide, means one thing: if Beijing’s gathering of US enemies was intended as a personal insult to the US president, it succeeded completely.
CNN also saw that what happened highlighted the absurdity of Trump’s attempts to subject these truly powerful men on the global stage to his alleged charm in deal-making and his claims that his purported close relations with these leaders could be decisive.
Trump met with Putin in Alaska last month, but his lavish red carpet reception has so far failed to make any progress towards ending the war in Ukraine. Putin disappointed Trump’s hopes by escalating attacks on Ukraine and postponing talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump’s summits in his first term with Kim Jong Un were also unsuccessful, as the North Korean leader now possesses more nuclear weapons than he did before the “photo diplomacy” Trump practiced.
According to the American news network, China’s grand celebration comes at a moment of international tension, as the rising Asian power seeks to exploit Trump’s erratic foreign policy, which has weakened America’s reputation as a reliable great power.
It also noted that the gathering of anti-Western powers in the cities of Tianjin and Beijing goes beyond mere provocation; it is an early warning that Trump’s potential policies in a second term – relying on imposing tariffs, intimidating weaker powers, and the “America First” nationalism – may backfire.
On her part, Jackie Wong, assistant professor of international studies at the American University of Sharjah, said, “China exploits the mistakes or slips made by the United States.”
The American news network saw that China is making a wide effort to highlight its rising power and test alternative global alliances and systems while seeking to surpass the West, noting that Beijing, by gathering leaders from Asia, the Middle East, and other regions, was showcasing its coalition’s ability to disrupt the global power of the United States on multiple fronts.
