Israeli far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized on Tuesday the Gaza peace plan announced by US President Donald Trump and supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a post on X, Smotrich described the plan as a “resounding diplomatic failure and a disregard of all lessons from the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that ignited the Gaza war.”

He added, “In my estimation, it will also end in tears; our children will be forced to fight in Gaza again.”

Arab, Islamic, and Western countries quickly praised Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza, which Netanyahu declared his support for, while Hamas has yet to respond.

What does the plan entail?

The plan, published by the White House shortly before the conference, calls for an immediate ceasefire if both parties agree, and the release of all hostages held in Gaza within 72 hours of Israel’s public agreement to the deal, followed by Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death.

It also stipulates that Gaza be demilitarized and governed by a transitional committee composed of Palestinian technocrats and international experts under a board chaired by Donald Trump, with no role whatsoever for Hamas.

Hamas received the plan text from Qatari and Egyptian mediators, according to an official. Trump confirmed he would chair the “Peace Management Board” overseeing Gaza’s transitional phase, which includes former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who quickly welcomed the “bold and smart” plan.

During this phase, Gaza’s affairs will be managed by a “non-political, technocratic” Palestinian committee.

According to other provisions in the plan, the US will work with “Arab and international partners to form an international force to stabilize Gaza, which will deploy immediately.”
