Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that he will travel to Washington this week to meet with US President Donald Trump and other officials in the energy and defense sectors.
He said at a press conference held in Kyiv alongside EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, “I will meet President Trump in Washington this week.”
He added, “We need to discuss a series of measures I would like to propose to the president,” without revealing any details.
Zelensky expressed hope to meet Trump on Friday, noting that he will hold “other meetings” with US officials.
He also mentioned meetings in the United States with representatives of “military companies” and members of Congress.
He explained that “the main issue will be air defense, but I will also meet with representatives of companies in the energy sector.”
In recent days, energy facilities in Ukraine have been hit again, threatening to deprive many Ukrainians of electricity and heating as winter approaches.
Zelensky noted in a Monday evening post on X platform that a delegation including senior Ukrainian officials, including Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak, and National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, is on its way to the United States.
Zelensky expressed his “gratitude” to the US president, praising the “dialogue” with him and his “support” for Ukraine.
Last weekend, the Ukrainian president held two phone calls within two days with his US counterpart.
Zelensky said on Monday that he discussed “in detail” with Trump during these calls Ukraine’s “capabilities (to conduct) long-range strikes.”
On Sunday, the US president said he might warn Russian President Vladimir Putin that Kyiv could obtain Tomahawk missiles if Moscow does not end the war that erupted after the Russian military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
