Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of attempting to mislead Washington just days before a scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Zelensky stated in his daily video address on Sunday evening, “We understand Russia’s intention to try to deceive America. We will not allow this.” The two presidents are set to meet next Friday in Alaska to discuss a potential resolution to the war in Ukraine after more than three years of conflict. Zelensky was not invited to the meeting.

The US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, told CNN that he does not rule out inviting Zelensky to the US-Russia talks, adding that “President Trump will make the decision.” Zelensky expressed appreciation for Trump’s determination to end the war but added that the only reason the killing continues in Ukraine is Putin’s desire to wage war and “manipulate everyone he communicates with.” Zelensky emphasized he would reject any peace agreement involving territorial concessions, affirming, “We will definitely defend our state and independence.” He added, “There is clear support for the principle that everything related to Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation.” Meanwhile, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, announced a special video conference with EU foreign ministers ahead of the anticipated US-Russia talks.

Kallas stated in a press release that she intends to discuss the next steps on Monday, given that “Europe’s core interests are at stake.” She said, “Any agreement between the US and Russia must include Ukraine and the EU, as it is a matter concerning the security of Ukraine and all of Europe.” She stressed that Russia’s aggression should not be rewarded, adding that the territories temporarily occupied by Russia belong to Ukraine. Kallas urged the US to use its influence to push Russia towards serious negotiations, warning that Moscow will not stop its aggression unless it feels it cannot continue.
