On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law regarding his country’s withdrawal from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture.

According to the law published in the Russian State Laws Information System, Russia has withdrawn from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of 1987.

Russia had been a member of the Convention since 1998, which was established in 1987.

It is noted that the Russian government ended its membership in the Council of Europe in March 2022 and also withdrew from the European Convention on Human Rights in September 2022.
