Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday called on his country’s allies, including the United States, to take concrete measures after Russia launched a wide-ranging missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy facilities.
Zelensky: We Need Decisive Action
Zelensky said in an online statement: “We need decisive action from the United States, Europe, and the G7 by providing air defense systems and tightening sanctions.” He confirmed that Russia launched more than 450 drones and 30 missiles in the attack.
Power Outages
Earlier, officials said Russia carried out a major attack on central Kyiv, causing a fire in a multi-story residential building and targeting energy sites early Friday morning, leading to power outages in parts of the city.
Casualties and Damage to 12 Residential Buildings
The governor of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine said drones and missiles caused damage to 12 residential buildings, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old child and injuries to four others. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported 12 people injured, eight of whom were hospitalized. He said power outages and water supply disruptions affected neighborhoods on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River that runs through the city. Photos posted online showed fires in residential apartments and firefighters preparing to extinguish them. Drone debris also fell in several areas of the city.
Thousands Without Electricity
Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Kriachko said Russian forces struck energy sites. She added on Facebook, “Energy experts are taking all necessary measures to mitigate the negative consequences.” She continued, “Once safety conditions allow, energy experts will begin assessing the attack’s effects and carrying out repairs.” Kyiv region governor Mykola Kalashnyk said about 28,000 households remained without power as of Friday morning in the region and that vital infrastructure and social facilities currently rely on generators.
The Russian attack also damaged energy infrastructure in the Poltava region in central Ukraine, cutting electricity to about 17,000 consumers. Russian forces have intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent weeks as winter approaches in the war that has lasted more than three and a half years.
