Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday described opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as a “wicked witch,” two days after she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee awarded the 58-year-old Machado the prestigious prize for “her struggle to achieve a peaceful and just transition from dictatorship to democracy” in Venezuela.
Maduro accused the opposition leader of calling for a foreign invasion, saying “90% of the people reject this wicked witch,” without naming her or commenting on her Nobel Peace Prize win.
The United States has long opposed the rule of the leftist Venezuelan leader and the administration of President Donald Trump deployed a small naval fleet in Caribbean waters off the coast of Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government often refers to the opposition leader as “La Sayona,” a female character from Venezuelan folklore turned into an evil spirit seeking revenge.
During an event commemorating the discovery of the Americas, celebrated in Venezuela as “Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day,” Maduro said, “We want peace and we will have it, but with freedom and sovereignty.”
Machado supports the U.S. military maneuvers in waters near Venezuela. She dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize “to the suffering people of Venezuela” and to President Trump, who was also a candidate for the award.
During her Saturday appearance on Fox News, Machado praised President Trump, saying he “deserves” the prize, “not only because he engaged in ending eight wars within a few months, but because his actions were decisive in bringing Venezuela closer to the threshold of freedom.”
