The “Homeland Protectors” party is holding its extraordinary general conference today, Monday, to elect a new party leader following the late General Galal El-Heridy, the party’s founder and former chairman, who passed away last January.
The conference is taking place at the Al Manara International Conference Center in Cairo, with wide participation from party leaders, senior members, and representatives from various governorates. Voting is scheduled to decide the new chairman who will lead the party in the upcoming period.
Sources familiar with the matter told Youm7 that General Mohamed Abbas Helmy, former Air Force commander and former Minister of Civil Aviation, is the strongest and closest candidate to assume the party leadership, especially after Dr. Ashraf El-Shehy, former Minister of Higher Education, withdrew from the race.
This internal election comes at an important political time witnessing a reorganization of the party and parliamentary landscape, which increases the importance of selecting strong leadership capable of continuing the party’s path and expanding its presence in the political arena.
The party stated in an official statement that choosing a new leader represents a fresh start in the journey of “Homeland Protectors,” especially after the successes achieved in the 2025 Senate elections, where the party won 25 individual seats in addition to 19 seats on the National List for Egypt. These results strengthened the party’s position as an influential parliamentary force, making the completion of organizational building and the selection of new leadership a pivotal step for the party’s future and its role in supporting the Egyptian state and its national institutions.
The political street is eagerly awaiting the outcomes of today’s conference as a decisive milestone in the party’s journey, where the shape of the new leadership will be determined and its ability to respond to upcoming political challenges, particularly regarding preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections, expanding the party’s base in Egyptian society, and consolidating its presence as one of the main political entities supporting the state.
