A spokesperson for Chelsea Clinton told the Washington Examiner last week that she is not considering running for the soon-to-be-vacant congressional seat of Representative Jerry Nadler in New York, denying rumors to the contrary.
Meanwhile, Jack Schlossberg, grandson of President John F. Kennedy, told The New York Times on Tuesday that running for Nadler’s Manhattan seat is “definitely possible,” with Nadler’s retirement after more than three decades in Congress opening the door for change in one of Manhattan’s most influential Democratic strongholds.
Nadler, 78, said, “My term in Congress will be my last,” emphasizing the need to “pass the torch to a new generation.” In an interview with The New York Times, he added that observing President Joe Biden’s condition revealed the necessity for generational change within the party.
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, has previously denied speculation about running for the seat.
Jack Schlossberg, 32, a lawyer and writer, has hinted several times at his political ambitions and stated to The New York Times that running for Congress is “definitely possible.” He is known for his comedic social media presence, posting satirical videos of public figures such as First Lady Melania Trump.
The open race for Nadler’s Manhattan seat is expected to attract national attention and major donors, and whether Clinton or Kennedy ultimately runs, the competition is shaping up to be a significant test of the Democratic Party’s strength in one of its most loyal districts.
Schlossberg, a graduate of Yale and Harvard and son of former diplomat Caroline Kennedy, has not held public office but currently hosts a political commentary show on YouTube and worked as a political correspondent for Vogue during the 2024 elections.
He is also a sharp critic of his mother’s cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health and Human Services Secretary in the Trump administration.
