Japanese car manufacturer Toyota announced yesterday that it will invest 680 million euros (792 million dollars) in a new production line in the Czech Republic to manufacture a battery-powered electric car.

The Czech government and Toyota said in a joint statement yesterday that the line will be built with a government incentive of up to 64 million euros (75 million dollars) to expand Toyota’s existing plant in Kolín, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Prague.

This factory will become Toyota’s first plant in Europe to produce battery electric vehicles.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala said the new production line will create 245 additional jobs at the plant, which already employs 3,200 people. Toyota did not disclose details about the start date or the new model to be produced.
