English club Tottenham announced on Monday the signing of their Argentine defender Cristian Romero on a long-term contract. Romero joined on loan from Italian club Atalanta in August 2021 and signed permanently the following year. Danish coach Thomas Frank named him captain for the European Super Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month. The 27-year-old has played 126 matches for Tottenham so far. He was the best defender in the Italian Serie A in the 2020-2021 season and helped Atalanta qualify for the Champions League in his first season. Romero captained Tottenham in the last four Europa League matches last season, playing a key role in winning the title. He received the club’s Player of the Season award and the Man of the Match award in the final. Internationally, Romero debuted for Argentina in June 2021 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and has 44 caps with 3 goals.
He helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the Finalissima tournament.
