The British newspaper “The Telegraph” has learned that former US President Donald Trump is working to gather prominent Palestinian figures from around the world to assist in managing Gaza following the ceasefire agreement and end of the war.
A senior source familiar with US-led preparations to stabilize Gaza stated that a “full slate” of candidates from Gaza and the global Palestinian diaspora has been identified to manage public services in the sector.
The source added that these individuals will be responsible for daily public service management until the Palestinian Authority is sufficiently reformed to take over.
The newspaper explained that the “Peace Authority,” an international external body chaired by Donald Trump with the help of former British Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair, will oversee the mission.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ceasefire across the torn coastal sector on Friday local time, declaring the start of a 72-hour countdown for Hamas to release the 48 hostages still held inside the sector.
Under Trump’s 20-point peace plan, the next phase will include dismantling Hamas’s military infrastructure and disarming Gaza under the supervision of independent monitors.
The US says Hamas and Israel have agreed to the full terms of the 20-point plan, not just parts of it.
The plan requires Hamas to relinquish any role in Gaza’s administration and place its weapons “out of use,” similar to what was demanded of the Irish Republican Army under the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland.
With the agreement on the “first phase” of the plan and preparations underway for a major prisoner and hostage exchange within days, the US and other parties are rushing to establish new security and governance foundations in Gaza.
The newspaper quoted a source saying: “There are two elements on the security side. First, a credible stability force that allows Israelis to say, ‘Okay, we will leave and not let Hamas thrive.’ Second, a Palestinian civilian police force, run by Palestinians for the people of Gaza.”
The source, closely familiar with US plans, added that governance structures in Gaza are also a priority.
He also rejected the idea, widespread in Arab media, that the “Peace Council” is a “new colonial construct.”
He said it is a vital mechanism to secure investments from neighboring Arab countries and protect against Israeli interference in the new Gaza administration.
