A secret Israeli military document reveals the failure of the “Gideon Vehicles” operation to achieve its objectives in Gaza.
On Sunday evening, the “Cabinet” (the security mini-cabinet) held a nearly six-hour meeting from 7:30 PM to 1:30 AM, mainly to discuss military plans for entering and controlling Gaza City.
During the meeting, the Israeli army presented its plans to the ministers, who showed a clear majority opposition to any partial deal.
An intense debate took place regarding the possibility and consequences of occupying Gaza City. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told the Cabinet members that the decisions under discussion would lead to military administration. Zamir said, “Let it be clear that we are heading towards military administration. You are voting on military administration.” Government Secretary Yossi Fox responded, “This is not true.”
During the discussion, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed an alternative: “Instead of military administration, voluntary migration can be encouraged.” Zamir stressed the consequences, but Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich concluded, “We have made a decision.”
Ben-Gvir reaffirmed his position, saying, “We understand the meaning. The deal, the withdrawal and return of soldiers, all this endangers the soldiers. Therefore, a massive fight must be waged, Hamas crushed, and migration encouraged.”
Later, Ben-Gvir proposed a vote on the issue of a deal with Hamas, suggesting a vote against any partial deal: “I propose we vote: who supports a partial deal and who opposes it. Let’s remove this issue from the agenda once and for all.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded, “No need to vote. This is not on the table. The goal now is the collapse of Hamas.” Government Secretary Fox commented, “This is a theoretical vote, pointless.”
Science Minister Gila Gamliel Ben-Gvir warned, “Don’t be sure you have a majority.” Ben-Gvir firmly replied, “Then let’s vote and see what you will do in the Likud party.”
During the meeting, a dispute developed between Minister Orit Strook and Chief of Staff Zamir. Strook cited a verse from the Torah: “And every man that is fearful and fainthearted, let him go and return unto his house, lest he make his brethren’s heart melt as his heart.” Strook emphasized the psychological principle of “melting the hearts of his brethren” and noted efforts to make Cabinet members retract their previous decision to control Gaza and crush Hamas. She said, “We must not give in to this effort because the decision is important and decisive.”
Zamir responded, “I have come with two missions in my life: to prevent nuclear Iran and destroy Hamas. I recommended an operation in Iran. Every morning, the Middle East map is before me, and I approve attacks everywhere. No one here is fearful or fainthearted, including the generals present. I make strong decisions no one else has made. I present to you all the meanings and consequences of everything. If you want blind discipline, bring someone else!”
Prime Minister Netanyahu stopped the exchange and concluded, “I do not want blind discipline, nor do I want breaches of the framework.”
Netanyahu announced yesterday the start of implementing the decision to occupy Gaza City, while the International Red Cross confirmed the impossibility of evacuating the city safely and humanely due to current conditions.
