US President Donald Trump on Monday appointed one of his strongest supporters as the head of the main labor statistics agency, nearly two weeks after he dismissed its former chief following the release of poor job numbers. The new head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics is E.J. Anthony, an economic expert at a very conservative research center. On August 1, Trump accused Erica McEntarfer, without providing evidence, of manipulating statistics to tarnish his administration’s image and ordered her immediate dismissal, a move that shocked economic experts and angered opponents. Trump said on his social media network Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that I will appoint the distinguished economic expert, E.J. Anthony, as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.” He added, using his usual capital letters, “Our economy is thriving, and E.J. will ensure that the published numbers are honest and fair.”
