U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration will ask the Supreme Court to issue a swift ruling regarding tariffs that a court of appeals ruled unlawful last week.
The court’s Friday ruling threatens to undermine Trump’s use of tariffs as a key economic policy tool. The court allowed the tariffs to remain in place until October 14, giving the Trump administration a chance to appeal to the Supreme Court.
When asked about the court ruling, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that his administration will seek a quick decision as early as Wednesday “because we need an early ruling.”
Trump’s tariff policy is a cornerstone of his economic plans and is credited with bringing billions of dollars to the U.S. government.
He said, “It is a very important decision, and frankly, if they make the wrong decision, it will be devastating for our country.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Beissinger expressed confidence on Monday that the Supreme Court will uphold Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to impose broad tariffs on most trading partners.
