US President Donald Trump is chairing an exceptional meeting today, Tuesday, with top US Army and Navy commanders deployed worldwide, who were summoned to a Marine Corps base in Virginia without explanation last week.
Trump said he would use the direct meeting with senior US military leaders at the Marine Corps University in Quantico to tell them “we love them.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to speak about the “warrior spirit,” one of his favorite topics.
This meeting comes eight months after radical changes in the Department of Defense (the Pentagon) since Trump took office, including the dismissal of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Navy commander, and strikes against boats suspected of drug trafficking off the coast of Venezuela.
This has led to speculation, both within the military and among Americans, that the meeting might go far beyond what Trump says is a morale boost to include discussions about demoting senior officers and reshaping US defense priorities.
An anonymous US official speaking on condition of anonymity about the meeting agenda said “no one knows” what will ultimately be discussed.
The military leaders attending the meeting will undergo public scrutiny for any reaction to Trump’s explicit political comments, who often drags the military into political issues.
The US military is supposed to be apolitical, loyal to the US Constitution, and independent of any party or political movement.
In an interview with Reuters on Sunday, Trump described the Quantico meeting as “team spirit.”
Trump said in the interview: “I want to tell the generals that we love them, they are dear leaders, and to be strong, smart, and compassionate.”
Trump’s presence is likely to overshadow that of Hegseth, who summoned leaders from around the world, including those stationed in remote locations in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense as the “Department of War,” returning to the title it held until after World War II, when officials sought to emphasize the Pentagon’s role in preventing conflicts.
