Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a phone call early Thursday to U.S. President Donald Trump following the signing of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The Hebrew newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth” reported that the U.S. president will visit Israel on Sunday, October 12.
The newspaper said Netanyahu invited President Trump to deliver a speech before the Israeli Knesset during the call.
The Prime Minister’s office stated that the two leaders had a very warm and impactful conversation, congratulating each other on the historic achievement of signing the agreement for the release of all hostages.
The office added: “The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his efforts and global leadership, while Trump congratulated the Prime Minister on his firm leadership and the measures taken. They agreed to continue their close cooperation.”
The conversation took place shortly after President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had signed the first phase of his ceasefire plan in the Gaza Strip.
It is worth noting that this is only the second time a U.S. president will address the Israeli Knesset; the first was in 1979 when President Carter spoke after signing the peace agreement with Egypt.
Trump tweeted on Truth Social: “Proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our peace plan.”
He added: “This means all hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw its forces to the agreed line as a first step toward a strong, stable, and lasting peace.”
He continued: “All parties will be treated fairly. It is a great day for the Arab and Islamic world, for Israel, for all surrounding countries, and for the United States of America.”
Trump concluded his post by thanking the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey who worked with them to make this historic and unprecedented event successful. “Blessed are the peacemakers!”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the government will meet on Thursday to approve the agreement or the release of the agreed Palestinian prisoners.
Netanyahu said in a statement: “With the approval of the first phase of the plan, all our captives will return home. This is a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory for Israel. From the beginning, I made it clear that we will not rest until all our captives return and we achieve all our goals.”
He added that thanks to firm determination, decisive military action, and the great efforts of our friend and ally President Trump, they have reached this critical turning point.
Hamas officially announced the agreement, expressing gratitude to President Trump and the Arab and Islamic countries.
The movement called on the world to ensure Israel’s commitment to the terms of the agreement.
Additionally, the Associated Press reported that the release of the twenty hostages said to be alive is expected by Sunday, while Israel said it could happen on Saturday.
Regarding the deceased hostages, Hamas pledged to return those whose locations are known for certain and confirmed it does not know the whereabouts of nine out of 28 deceased.
In this context, a source familiar with the details said the movement also pledged to refrain from holding ceremonies for the release of the hostages.
