US President Donald Trump said that NATO should consider expelling Spain from its membership due to its delay in increasing military spending according to the new commitments agreed upon within the alliance.
During a meeting at the White House with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö on Thursday evening, Trump urged European leaders to pressure Madrid.
The US president said, “You need to start talking to Spain, reach out to them and find out why they are delayed, they have no excuse, and maybe you should frankly kick them out of NATO.”
NATO members agreed in June to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, a key demand by Trump who has for years urged Europeans to take greater responsibility for their own defense.
