US President Donald Trump described his meeting on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European partners as “very good,” stating that he has begun arrangements for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky following a subsequent call with Putin.

Trump added that the meeting discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, which will be provided by European countries in coordination with the United States.

Trump said, “At the end of the meetings, I called President Putin and began arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined later, between President Putin and President Zelensky.”

He added that his deputy JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff will handle the arrangements between the two countries.

Axios reported, citing a knowledgeable source, “There is hope that the Putin-Zelensky meeting will take place by the end of this month.”

Putin and Trump discussed raising the level of representatives in Ukrainian talks during a 40-minute phone call.

The Russian media agency reported that Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said, “The idea was discussed that it would be useful to explore the possibility of raising the level of representatives from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides, i.e., the representatives participating in direct negotiations.”

The Financial Times reported, citing a document it reviewed, that Ukraine will commit to purchasing $100 billion worth of American weapons, financed by Europe, as part of an agreement to obtain US security guarantees after reaching a peaceful settlement with Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Monday for a European quadrilateral meeting after Trump proposed a trilateral summit including the presidents of Ukraine and Russia.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Trump’s announcement regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, considering that “the results of the meeting exceeded our expectations.”
