US President Donald Trump announced that the United States is aware that Hamas is “re-arming itself” to restore order in Gaza, noting that Washington “gave them approval for a period of time.”
This came in response to a reporter’s question about reports of Hamas re-arming and establishing itself as a Palestinian police force and pursuing “opponents.”
Trump explained, “We understand because they really want to stop the problems. They were frank about that, and we gave them approval for a period of time.”
The US president pointed to the human losses in Gaza, saying, “They have lost 60,000 people. That’s a large amount of revenge. And those living now were, in many cases, very young when all this started.”
He added that the US entrusts Hamas with “monitoring that there are no major crimes or some problems that happen when you have areas like these that have been literally destroyed.”
Trump ended with cautious optimism: “I think things will be fine. Who knows for sure, but I think things will be fine,” referring to the reconstruction and stabilization process in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Interior Ministry in Gaza confirmed on Sunday evening that security forces are besieging and clashing with a militia inside Gaza City that killed displaced people while returning from the southern sector.
On Sunday morning, the ministry announced the opening of repentance and general amnesty for “gang members who were not involved in murder crimes,” to settle their legal and security status definitively.
The ministry explained that some gangs exploited the chaos during the war to commit unlawful acts, including attacking citizens’ property and looting humanitarian aid, noting that some gang members had not stained their hands with blood.
Later, Palestinian security sources announced that security forces in Gaza fully controlled the armed militia in Gaza City and are conducting comprehensive sweeps in their areas of presence.
The sources reported the killing of several suspects accused of executing displaced people and collaborating with the occupation during clashes with the militia in Gaza. A Palestinian security force also arrested several lawbreakers after an armed clash in the Khan Younis outskirts in the southern sector. The number of militia detainees reached about 60 members, who were transferred to secure locations to complete investigations.
