US President Donald Trump announced on Friday the imposition of additional 100% tariffs on China starting November 1.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social page: “I just learned that China has taken a very hostile stance towards trade, sending a strongly hostile message to the world, announcing that starting November 1, 2025, it will impose broad export controls on almost all products it manufactures, and even some products it does not manufacture. This affects all countries without exception, and it is clear that this was a plan China set years ago. This is unprecedented in international trade and represents a moral disgrace in dealing with other countries.”

He added: “Based on China’s unprecedented stance, and speaking only on behalf of the United States, not other countries facing similar threats, starting November 1, 2025 (or earlier depending on any additional actions China takes), the US will impose a 100% tariff on China, in addition to any tariffs currently paid. On November 1, we will also impose export controls on any and all vital software.”

Trump concluded his post by saying: “It’s unbelievable that China would take such an action, but they did, and the rest is history. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Previously, Trump announced he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC summit hosted by South Korea, and plans to visit China next year.

Bloomberg reported earlier that China is pressuring the Trump administration to lift trade restrictions on Beijing for national security reasons, offering investments worth one trillion dollars. The two sides reached a framework agreement to keep the Chinese social media giant TikTok operating in the US despite security concerns raised by US lawmakers.

The White House specifically responded to questions about the talks, stating the administration is focused on ensuring China meets its current commitments, referring to the so-called phase one agreement during Trump’s term. A US official added that the administration is communicating with the Chinese to ensure a level playing field for American businesses, farmers, and workers.

Chinese Embassy spokesman in Washington Liu Pengyu said: “We hope the US side will cooperate with China to implement the important mutual understandings reached by our two presidents during their phone call.”
