US President Donald Trump expressed on Thursday his belief that he is the only person in world history to have ended eight wars, commenting on his chances of winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump told reporters at the White House in response to a question about how he rates his chances of winning the prize: “No one in history has stopped eight wars in nine months, while I stopped eight wars.”
He added, “This has never happened before, I don’t know what the prize committee will do but what I do know well is that I stopped eight wars, let them do what they want, I didn’t do it for the prize, I did it because I saved many lives.”
The Washington Post reported, citing informed sources, that Trump’s habit of frequently mentioning the Nobel Peace Prize could negatively affect his chances of receiving it.
Trump had stated last February that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
The South Korean newspaper Chugan Chosun reported that Park Sung-won, vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee in the South Korean parliament, officially nominated him for the prize.
East Timor’s president, Jose Ramos-Horta, also announced his readiness to nominate Trump if he manages to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis and the Gaza conflict.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed the same position, noting he would support Trump’s nomination if he succeeds in establishing peace, but added that the Nobel Prize “does not mean much anymore,” according to his words.
In the same context, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu handed Trump a letter during their meeting proposing his nomination for the prize, while Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe expressed his belief that Trump truly deserves it.
US Congressman Earl Carter also submitted an official request to the Nobel Committee to nominate Trump for the Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts to ease tensions between Iran and Israel, while the Pakistani government also proposed his nomination in recognition of his role in mediating the conflict with India.
