US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has started arrangements for a bilateral peace summit between his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, to be followed by a trilateral summit including himself. Trump made the announcement after hosting Zelensky and European leaders at the White House, stating that he contacted Putin to begin arrangements for a meeting at a location to be determined. He described the meeting as very good and discussed security guarantees for Ukraine to be provided by European countries in coordination with the US. Trump affirmed that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is within reach and could be achieved in the near future. This comes amid Russia’s military attack on Ukraine since February 24, 2022, with Russia demanding Kyiv abandon joining Western military alliances, a condition Kyiv rejects as interference and demands Russian withdrawal from its territory.
