Trump told Reuters in response to a question about Gaza: “The war is over,” adding, “The ceasefire will hold, many verbal guarantees have been given, and things will get better.”
The former U.S. president also revealed that Hamas might release some of the prisoners it holds earlier than the scheduled date agreed upon between the movement and Israel.
He said, “The hostages may be released a little early,” noting that a “peace council” will soon be formed in Gaza.
Trump pointed out that the new administration in Gaza will start its work “very quickly,” confirming his desire to visit the Palestinian territory.
He also stated that “if it weren’t for the attack on Iran, there would have been a very dark cloud over the Gaza agreement because Tehran apparently would have had nuclear weapons.”
The U.S. president confirmed that “relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are good, and he has done a very good job,” adding, “We must credit Qatar for its role in the negotiations.”
Israeli media reported on Sunday evening that the prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas will begin in two stages at 8:00 AM on Monday.
According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper: “The Red Cross met with the hostages and reported that some are in critical condition – hours before their release from Hamas captivity, which will start tomorrow morning.”
The newspaper noted that families of the prisoners were asked to arrive at the reception area in the Re’im camp at 7:30 AM, and the Israeli army is ready to move to hand them over within an hour of being called.
Israeli sources also said the army has placed special units on alert in preparation for the release of Israeli prisoners in Gaza, and the Israeli Prison Service has received orders to release Palestinian prisoners.
