US President Donald Trump said Tuesday evening that his administration will request the Supreme Court to issue a swift ruling on tariffs that an appeals court ruled illegal last week.

The court’s Friday ruling threatens to undermine Trump’s use of tariffs as a key tool in economic policy. The court allowed the tariffs to remain in place until October 14, giving the Trump administration an opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court.

When asked about the court ruling, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that his administration will seek a quick decision as early as Wednesday “because we need an early ruling.”

The tariff policy pursued by Trump is a cornerstone of his economic plans and is credited with bringing billions of dollars to the US government.

He said, “It is a critical decision, and frankly, if they make the wrong decision, it will be devastating for our country.”

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence on Monday that the Supreme Court will uphold Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to impose broad tariffs on most trading partners.
