US President Donald Trump said Tuesday evening that Washington needs a “very large” cut in interest rates by the Federal Reserve (the US central bank).

Trump told reporters, “We need a very large cut.”

The president, a Republican, has repeatedly criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for not lowering interest rates.

For several months, Trump has publicly called on the central bank to ease monetary policy.

Trump has not hidden his desire to fire Powell, whose term ends next year, although his authority as president is limited to appointing the Fed chair, not dismissing him.
