Nasser Thabet, Director of the Cairo Directorate of Supply and Internal Trade, confirmed ongoing monitoring of strategic commodities, market conditions, prices on the ground, shops and restaurants to ensure product suitability and compliance with health and environmental requirements. The intensive inspection campaigns resulted in filing 607 cases against municipal bakeries for various offenses including selling above the official price, underweight, and diverting 168 units allocated for bakeries to be resold on the black market for profit. Authorities also seized many food items with unknown origins or without proper documentation: 140 kg of fermented fish (feseekh) and salted herring (renjah), 9,285 kg of rice, 800 kg of sugar, 408 bottles of oil, 2,237 kg of meat, and 336 kg of poultry.
The director stressed the continuation of regulatory and inspection campaigns on shops and markets to control prices, take preventive measures against smuggling and hoarding for black-market resale, and inspect meat and poultry display areas at basic-goods outlets to ensure product quality and safety.
