Pakistani and Afghan border forces exchanged heavy gunfire on Saturday following what Pakistani security sources described as unprovoked firing from the Afghan side at multiple locations along the border.

The Afghan forces opened fire without justification at several points along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, including Angoor Adda, Bajaur, Kurram, Dir, Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan, and Paramcha in Balochistan.

Sources said Pakistan responded with heavy artillery, tanks, and drones, and also deployed fighter jets. The clashes are ongoing.

Local media broadcast videos showing Pakistani security forces destroying Afghan positions, with claims that Taliban forces abandoned multiple sites and fled the area.

Security sources also reported a high alert declared on the eastern border with India amid growing concerns of possible Indian intervention in the escalating tensions.

According to security sources, “the motive behind the firing from the Afghan side was to facilitate the movement of militants across the border.”

The exchange of fire comes during the official visit of the Afghan Foreign Minister to India.

Recently, Pakistani drones and fighter jets have conducted multiple airstrikes in Afghanistan, including one in Kabul, targeting militants.
